Calimanesti is a small town 15km north of Ramnicu Valcea, the county capital. Ramnicu Valcea is a good example of an older settlement which was 'systematised' by the communist regime prior to 1989. Calimanesti is smaller and is associated with one of Wallachia's most well known folklore festivals in August each year. Immediately to the north is the Olt defile which is a deep, twisting gorge. This part of the Olt valley has been used for the generation of hydro-electric power and contains several fairly new HEP dams. Calimanesti Field Centre in Valcea county is operated
by the University of Bucharest. It is located in the valley of the
River Olt in the sub-Carpathians to the north of Ramnicu Valcea
on the road between Ramnicu Valcea and Sibiu.
