VIRTUAL MONTANA

Trans-European Mountain Areas, a virtual fieldtrip

The Project Planned Products Trials and Tests
Activities 1999-2000 Technological Development Dissemination
Outcomes Development of Products Intensive Programme

Virtual Montana is supported by funds from the European Commission through the ODL framework, (Minerva). This project develops materials in support of the European Dimension in the teaching of Geography. Drawn together by two common themes, mountain environments and fieldwork, Virtual Montana will provide a valuable and relevant product to support student experiences carried out in remote upland areas, an environment that is rarely well understood.

The Project

Virtual Montana is an Open and Distance Learning Pilot Project funded under the Minerva Action of Socrates promoted by the European Commission. It seeks to create an information base and an on-line community of those interested in researching mountain environments. Virtual Montana will review and report on the use of technology to enhance and enable mountain fieldwork.

Virtual Montana also uses information gathered by partners involved in an EC-funded Socrates Intensive Programme. The Minerva project produces an Open and Distance resource on the World Wide Web. This Web site will provide remote access to advice, guidance and information about undertaking fieldwork in upland areas. Though it concentrates on three locations, general sections provide support and guidance for those working in other areas. Virtual Montana supplies suitable information for educators and students to enhance their real fieldwork experiences.
