Students working in multinational groups in the village of Llanbedr, near Harlech, to estimate the rurality of the settlement and the influence of tourism on the village. Llanbedr is a medium sized village located approximately 2.5km inland from Cardigan Bay and six miles north of Barmouth. The village is separated from the sea by an extensive area of drained lowland, Morfa Dyffryn and Mochras (Shell Island). The centre of the village at Pont Llanbedr (the bridge which crosses the Afon Artro) is about 5m above sea level with the land rising to the south, east and north. The village has a cruciform form and is bisected by the A596. The railway line passes to the west and Llanbedr station is about 0.75km from the village centre. To the west of the railway is the Llanbedr Royal Aeronautical Establishment. The area surrounding Llanbedr is of considerable archaeological interest with evidence remaining of cromlechs and standing stones. Bronze Age stones dating back to 2000 BC have been found in Llanbedr churchyard and a Roman road passed close by. Today, Llanbedr has a variety of functions. One of the most recent developments has been the creation of Maes Artro Village, a craft centre just to the south of village centre containing amongst other features an RAF Museum and rural heritage exhibition. |
