Snowdonia means mountains of snow, and contains fourteen peaks exceeding 900m. It is the most spectacular scenery in Wales. Intense glaciation has produced a range of landforms from sharp aretes to moraine dammed lakes. The quality of the landscape was recognised in the creation of Snowdonia National Park in 1951, which includes the National Forest Park set up in 1937. The Nature Conservancy Council (which merged with the Countryside Commission to become the Countryside Commission for Wales) also established Reserves to safeguard the characteristic wild life, plants and animals, and geological features of outstanding interest.
