Aerial photography is a simple, reliable and inexpensive means of acquiring remotely sensed images. It is used mainly in the visible and near infrared portions of the spectrum, however, its principles are important throughout the field of remote sensing. It forms the primary source of information for compilation of many maps, especially large topographic maps.

There are many web sites available providing aerial photographs, here are three as a starting point. Look at the Terraserver web site to explore their aerial photographs highlighted on their world map. The University of California, Berkeley have an online archieve of aerial photographs in both colour and black and white which cover a 70 year period. Also look at the United States' Geological Survey (USGS) site which has an on-line booklet "Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images" providing a variety of images to compare.
