Aerial Photography: Interpretation

The use of keys

The process of image interpretation can be facilitated through the use of image interpretation keys. Key are also valuable training aids for novice interpreters and can also provide useful reference or refresher materials for more experienced interpreters. The key helps to evaluate the information presented on aerial images in an organised and consistent manner. It gives guidance on the correct identification of features or conditions on images. Normally a key will consist of two basic parts (1) a collection of annotated or captioned images, preferably stereopairs, illustrative of the features or conditions to be identified and (2) a graphic or word description of the image recognition characteristics for the features or conditions observed. There are two general types of image interpretation keys differentiated by the method of presentation of diagnostic features and these are a Selective key and an Elimination key.
