This is an example of a Code of Practice for Field Safety that could be used with students studying in the field.
1. Planning, organisation and conduct of fieldwork The department has adopted the Code of Field Safety Practice published by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals in 1995. All staff are provided with a copy and must be familiar with its contents. Of particular practical use is Appendix C which provides and flow diagram and checklists for the planning, organisation and conduct of fieldwork. 2. Fieldwork participant health and behaviour All students and staff complete an off-site activities form in every year of study for each subject. At the beginning of the second semester of every academic year, tutors will ensure that all students on modules have completed an off-site activities form. M.Sc. students will complete forms on entry to course. The form is filed in the departmental office alphabetically in the year group. The secretary will check all students have returned a form and prepare a CONFIDENTIAL STUDENT FIELDWORK INFORMATION LIST of student health problems, first aid qualifications and dietary requirements for each subject year group from the information returned on the Off-site Activity forms. This must be updated at the beginning of the second semester in each academic year. The fieldwork course leader is responsible for ensuring that each fieldwork tutor has a laminated copy of this confidential information which they take with them into the field. The fieldwork leader is responsible for the return of ALL the Confidential Student Fieldwork Information Lists to the secretary after the fieldwork, who will check that all the lists have been returned. Before every field trip students should be asked if there has been any change of condition since completing the off-site activities form. If there has been a change, students must complete a new form and the Confidential Student Fieldwork Information List will be updated. All students are required to confirm by signature that they have received, understood and accept the conditions contained in the Students Fieldwork Code of Practice. The signed confirmation slips should be returned to the tutor handing out the Codes of Practice and returned to the departmental secretary who will record signatures on the Confidential Student Fieldwork Information List and file the slips. Students who have not returned an off-site activities form and/or signed slip from the Students’ Code of Practice will be contacted by the secretary. A member of staff in the department will be the contact person in Liverpool for emergencies occurring on fieldwork. In addition, the college safety officer will know where to find off-site activity forms. A list of fieldwork participants will be left in the departmental office. Thus in the office at all times will be a record of who is away on fieldwork and their contact and health details. Tutors involved in an emergency situation on fieldwork should immediately inform the contact tutor in Liverpool, from where communications can be arranged. Safety equipment for fieldwork activities is available in the department e.g. throw lines, foil blankets, survival bags, compasses, first aid kits etc. The risk assessment will identify the need for safety equipment to be taken out on any particular trip. Mobile phones are available centrally through the college. |
