a) La Clarée valley
A glaciated valley on the Franco-Italian frontier. Tourism has passed
this area by. It is an upland valley with traditional land uses. It
exhibits many of the features associated with upland glaciation and
post-glacial processes. The valley is flanked with high peaks and
has many scree and alluvial deposits.
b) Briançon
An old walled town, constructed by the engineer Vauban, at the junction
of four glaciated valleys. It is the highest town in Europe, known
for it's healthy, dry climate, having an average of over 310 sunny
days a year. It is a town that is modernising to deal with the huge
numbers of tourists which visit the area every year. The new town
also contains military barracks (for up to 5,000 soldiers) and many
clinics and hospitals.
