The High French Alps are located on the political frontier close to Italy. Survival in the high mountain environments guaranteed the need for trade with others in neighbouring valleys. Mountain passes became important conduits for travelers. Due to location and the environments of these areas, there are many links and connections between the people, places, customs and cultures of these Italian and French Mountain regions.
