The city of Embrun is built on a terrace. A belvedere at 80 meters above the Durance, allows a view onto the country. The city had a great development during the Roman Empire. Located along the route that link Arles and Briançon. It was an important religious center. Founded as head of the bishopric of the Alpes-Maritimes. In the Medieval Age the town became a possession of the Saint-Empire romain germanique. The bishops of Embrun obtained the title of "Princes". During the XIVth century, the place of Notre-Dame-Du-Réal became a place of great pilgrimage. Because of its location, Embrun had been frequently invade: Saracen, Huguenots, Duke of Savoy. Embrun is no more a bishopric, since 1802. |
