The Claree Valley is a beautiful unspoilt area near Briancon. It retains far more of original human and cultural features than the other valleys where tourism has been permitted and has developed on a large scale. The valley is a major glacial trough with evidence of recent glaciation. The sides of the valley consist of steep limestone cliffs with screes blanketing the lower slopes.
Deep ravines slice through these cliffs and many of them are tracks for avalanches. Much of the forest cover on the cliffs remains on the north facing slopes. The valley contains a number of old villages in which agriculture is a prominent activity. The numerous alluvial fans provide some flat land for farming, particularly pastoral activities. Like the other villages, these is a distinctive Alpine building style which remains popular and there are traces of the Italian origin for the churches.
Few industries remain but as in the other valleys, the local craft industries have suffered competition from the industrial cities of the north. The include, mining, quarrying, metal working, woollen textiles and gypsum processing.
