Looking N down the glacial trough valley of Nant Ffrancon from the edge of Cwm Idwal. Nant Ffrancon exhibits the typical flat-bottomed valley feature of an infilled former lakebed. Evidence indicates that a lake (Lake Ffrancon) occupied Nant Ffrancon immediately following the last glacial maximum (late Devensian). E flank (R) of valley shows clear evidence of post-glacial modification - scree, debris flows and a reputed protalus rampart (prominent bulge on slope). W flank (L) of valley contains the Northern Glyderau cirques (not shown) that formed during the latest Devensian {during ice sheet decay and Loch Lomond stadial (10.5-11.5 kyr B.P.)}. The last time ice/glaciers were present in Snowdonia.
