View from Cwm Idwal (near outlet stream of Llyn Idwal) over head of Nant Ffrancon (Ogwen step) towards Pen Yr Ole Wen (978m) - looking NNE. Left - glacial trough valley of Nant Ffrancon. Right - valley of Llyn Ogwen. Pen Yr Ole Wen is an ice-moulded hill - moulded prior to, and during, the last glacial maximum (late Devensian). Ice movement from R to L. Hill was probably a nunatak during ice sheet decay and the Loch Lomond Stadial when local valley glaciers and cirque glaciers were last present in Snowdonia.
